Publisher's Summary
From number one best seller Mark Billingham comes a masterful, intense crime novel that pits DI Tom Thorne against an evil beyond comprehension, yet shockingly real.
A bloody massage
As DI Nicola Tanner investigates what appears to be a series of organised killings, her partner Susan is brutally murdered, leaving the detective bereft, and vengeful.
A powerful ally
Taken off the case, Tanner enlists the help of DI Tom Thorne to pursue a pair of ruthless killers and the broker handing out the deadly contracts.
A conspiracy of silence
As the killers target their latest victim, Thorne takes the biggest risk of his career and is drawn into a horrifying and disturbing world in which families will do anything to protect their honour.

The best Tom Thorne yet!
Wow! This episode hit every mark. Brilliant story, fantastic character development with a terrific few newbies, and all based on real life disturbing cultural crimes.
If this doesn’t become another TV season it would be wasted!
My favourite Billingham yet and perfectly read by all 3 narrators!

i just love Mark Billingham"s books they all would make fantastic movies. I think because he narates his own novels, he tells the stories with so much more feeling and excitement than other narators.

Another great book and recording
I'd previously read this book, so knew it was a great story. The plot is a harrowing one and still a bit of a taboo subject, and is handled really well.
The recording is first class. Mark reading his own books is a masterstroke. He doesn't try and do stupid voices for each character, and I particularly like the introduction of other voice artists in this one.
Excellent.

At last a great book with a believable finish
I loved the plot and its wider socio-political context. It's delicate and difficult to write about crime among minority religious groups, or even majority religious groups but Mark Billingham treated his subject with respect. There was enough subtle research to make the various characters very believable. I recently asked for a refund for the dreadful disappointment by a crime writer who should know better. Mr Billingham has more than compensated. In his story, we didn't have the lead detective threatening to kill anyone, least of all the murderer. Instead we had Mark Billingham doing what he's paid to do. Creating a very satisfying end to a well narrated and beautifully written tale. And no. I haven't given Mark 5 out of 5 for every story he's written. This one's a six.
