About this listen

Kiran Mathur knows firsthand how dangerous love can be. After all, her sister's marriage in India nearly destroyed Kiran's family. So she's decided to redeem romance herself - by not falling for anyone who might disappoint her parents. That is, that was her plan right up until she met her new neighbor, Nash Hawthorne.

Nash is a dedicated psychologist and committed to being alone. His family life has taught him the inevitability of abandonment, and he isn't ready to question his beliefs. But spending time with Kiran makes him start to experience emotions he's never felt before. For both of them, love feels like a risk. But when the future only starts to make sense once they consider it together, it might be time to follow their hearts....

Though the narrator does a good job for the female characters the nasally twang she gives Nash almost made me ditch the book. But as I often wish chemistry was based on something other than 'oh, they're so gorgeous' I decided that voice could count as Nash's moderating character trait. I'm glad I did.

This story built a friendship before a love story which I appreciated and the insights into different cultures and upbringings was interesting. The emotional manipulation that was employed by the Indian parents was initially disturbing but then I realised it is not much different to how someone I know used to withhold access to her children to extended family if anyone questioned her choices. Such manipulation can be found in many places or cultures so I tried to withhold judgement until more was known.

I felt the ending wrapped up a little too abruptly, the issues too easily swept aside after such complexity, but on the whole it was an okay read.
