Not the literary masterpieces I've heard they are

Once I accepted that these aren't the great literary works I had heard of, I could enjoy some of it for the vivid writing, the whimsical, romantic, silly and sometimes fable-like stories. Some stories were terrible, others were a fun ride, others still overt and dull moralising. But none deserve to be championed >100 years later.
