Jack London war zweimal verheiratet. Er starb am 22. November 1916 im Alter von 40 Jahren auf seiner Farm. Die früher weithin vertretene Auffassung, London hätte seinem Leben selbst ein Ende gesetzt, gilt heute als sehr umstritten. Vieles spricht dafür, dass London, der die letzten Jahre seines Lebens an einer Niereninsuffizienz litt, einer Harnvergiftung erlag.
