Story
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few. So begins this most beloved of all American Zen works. Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as this famous opening line of Shunryu Suzuki's classic. In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about. An instant teaching in the first minutes. And that's just the beginning.

Story
Life has a way of provoking us with traffic jams and computer malfunctions, with emotionally distant partners and crying children - and before we know it, we're upset. We feel terrible, and then we end up saying and doing things that only make matters worse. But it doesn't have to be that way, says Pema Chödrön. It is possible to relate constructively to the inevitable shocks, losses, and frustrations of life so that we can find true happiness. The key, Pema explains, is not biting the "hook" of our habitual responses.

Everyday Zen
Beck was one of the best Zen teachers in American Zen and is known for not playing into the whole Zen Master scam. Easy to listen to. Human. Actually enlightened. And probably the antidote for most of the Buji Zen fluff and poseur teachers who preen their self images endlessly.
Really, their are no frills here, despite the bits of shakuhachi intermezzos...just a boring old Zen practice talk about living mindfully and failing constantly.

One is not two, and two is not one.
One of the more confounding aspects of zen practice for Westerners is the consistent dichotomy and essential paradox woven into the teachings. Not because of a deliberate attempt to confuse-though one might think so, but because paradox is a necessary quality of the mind---and the brain, our experience is everything and nothing simultaneously.
Joko Beck was a westerner, a child of the sixties, and one of the original people to bring zen to North America and to make correlations to psychology and mindfulness. In not trying so hard to sound "zen" and relating the practice to every day "western" phenomena--she does an excellent job of essentializing zen and a terrible job at enlivening and vivifying our practice. Joko would say that if you need "enlivening practice, of vivifying--that is not practice. And she'd be right. However, we are responsible for our practice, and it's best to pay attention when we do not relate to or "like" an individual style of teaching. In Zen, there is also a notion that this "not liking the teacher" is a good sign!
I suggest Zen Mind, Beginner Mind narrated by Peter Coyote, or Kaz Tanahashi's book on Dogen. Zen doesn't have to be stripped of color or watered down to achieve "Zen." Indeed Maezumi Roshi, who is her lineage teacher, from who she broke retains joyfulness and bodhicitta and avoids the rambling, drowning tonality that some may very much appreciate, but from which others may feel nothing.
That is the practice--some good, some not so good.

This is not the Zen you are looking for…
Heed the warning given in the first few minutes of the recording that the speaker will ramble. Ramble she does, but so slowly that listening at x1.5 speed sounds normal. The first "chapter" of these lecture recordings was more than enough time wasted for this listener.
