Romanen udfolder de dilemmaer, som virksomheden står overfor i forhold til sorg, ritualer, lokalsamfund og klima. Vi møder også en gruppe golems, som er vokset frem af menneskeligenes jord og nu er ansatte som gartnere i Cyklus under stærkt prekære forhold. Særligt konfliktfyldt bliver det, da den administrerende direktør for Cyklus åbner en filial i Eleusis, Grækenland, i samarbejde med nogle guder fra et antikt dødsrige.
