Publisher's Summary

For millennia, Stoicism has been the ancient philosophy that attracts those who seek greatness, from athletes to politicians and everyone in between. And no wonder: its embrace of self-mastery, virtue and indifference to that which we cannot control has much to offer those grappling with today's chaotic world. But who were the Stoics?

In this book, Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman offer a fresh approach to understanding Stoicism through the lives of the people who practised it. Through short biographies of all the famous and lesser-known Stoics, this book will show what it means to live stoically and reveal the lessons to be learned from their struggles and successes. The result is a treasure trove of insights for anyone in search of living a good life.

Get a professional narrator...

Robotic and punishing to try and engage. The content is great but the author really should have paid someone to narrate for him. I couldn’t finish it.

Professional narrator required

Awesome book and I am a fan, however the Audio book is a nightmare. The author seems to have “read” the book in a robotic way without any proper narration. Very difficult to follow, cant finish the audio book. Sorry!

Good to learn how the stoic live their lives

A little long winded but the different stories on how the stoics live their life is powerful reminder of Memento Mori in which remember that we must die thus it's always important to learn, take accountability, think of others, be appreciative and be grateful for every single day

Uneven and hurried narration

This is my fourth Ryan Holiday book. Having read and listened to three others. The synopsis messaging here is very good for a person seeking to understand the founding thinkers and practitioners of Stoicism.
But several of the chapters are read monotonously and unnecessarily fast. There was no love shown for the words being spoken. The chapter on Cleanthes I found particularly difficult and almost gave up the book right then. The pleasant surprise is the discussion between the authors at the end of the Audio book. That was deep, true and cared-for and was well worth the listen.

Great philosophy, amazing book, fantastic authors

I love stoicism and Ryan Holiday goes very deep on it. In this book he tells practical examples of this philosophy.

Narration is overly fast and flat.

Made it through to the end but the hurried, Shatner-esque narration made it quite a chore in places. I hope that Ryan asks somebody else to narrate his next book because, as good as the content is, this left me feeling very cold. I DO recommend the book, but physical is definitely the best option for this one I think.

Shame about the Narration

This is a good book, full of amazing historical detail that reflects well on the author..Alas, the same cannot be said for his narration which is like an 10 year old reading hurriedly from a book in front of a class. The narrator is not telling a story; he is merely saying the words. I am dissuaded from purchasing any of his other books where he is the narrator.

Great book. Badly read.

Ryan is a great Stoic writer. Sadly, the performance is dull and often spoken in monotone. However, it's still 100% worth getting.

A timeline who’s-who of stoicism - audio delivery could be better …

Lots of books on and references to the main practitioners of Stoicism now exist; with Ryan Holiday being one of the main modern day advocates.

This is a great accompaniment to all of this work, with a timeline who’s-who of the stoic way of thinking and how it evolved over time.

Now, I’ve got huge respect for any author who narrates their own audiobooks. It’s a big job. Narration is also a skill, with the spoken delivery being different to the actual writing of the content.

Sometimes you’ve just got to know when you have the voice and skill, or not. I don’t think my accent would provide an engaging tone …. And In this case, in my opinion, it’s a ‘not’. Same tone, spoken too fast. I’d advise listening at 0.8 or 0.9 speed.

The conversation at the end between the authors is just as good as the content too. Great little bonus

Fascinating content. Hard listen. Probably better reading the book?

Great author but an awful narration

Really believe that Ryan is a fantastic author but his narration of this book is awful. He’s got better and I have listened to other book (obstacle is the way) by him but this one is just dreadful. See other similar reviews.

I had to give up.

Terrible Narration

I barely made it past the first chapter it was that awful to listen to, he's speaking so fast that you can hardly understand what he's talking about. I have listened to several of Ryan Holiday's books over the past year and they were a pleasure to listen to but this is the worst audiobook I have ever tried to listen to. The author really needs to re-do the narration on this book or remove it from Audible all together it's that bad. This audiobook is not worth the money/credit or the time.

Complete disappointment

I was very eager to listen to this book given my interest in stoicism. But the delivery of narration just put me off. I had to give up after 2 hrs. The narration is monotonous and very soporific. It will be better for Audibles to re-record the book and re-issue. And while you do that, can I have my money back please.

Ryan is reading like a robot in this one

Other books he reads very well, but can't take this one. May try the paper book as the material seem very good.
