THE STORY

'The dream...it is a portent...of the end.'

The fortress world of Regium has a proud history, For millennia, it has endured when others have fallen to ruin and damnation, standing defiant in defence of the Imperium of Man. Lieutenant Castamon of the Ultramarines recognises these signs of an impending Tyranid invasion all too well. Rallying his warriors, the battle-hardened veteran launches a strike force to slaughter the xenos in the outer system, before it can reach Regium. But as this new tendril of Hive Fleet Leviathan proves unpredictable and deadly, Castamon and the First Company must harness all their skill, might, and zeal, or face utter annihilation.

Alright

Wasn’t to bad to keep up to date with what’s occurring at the current point in time.

I usually paint and listen and can keep up with the story quite well but struggled with this book, unsure on which characters were speaking and what exactly was occurring.

Could be good if all you are doing is listening, for example on a plane.

Better with differ Narrator

I didn't have a problem with the story but I had a hard time getting into story based the narrator's voices.
They all sounded like kids with little to now world experience that contradicted with the characters.

If you plan on getting this, make sure you give the sample a listen first. The story is nothing amazing but is great to get into 10th edition.

Not bad... but could be better.

The Narrator was a poor choice. His voice is too... juvenile for the space marine characters, making it hard to follow who was speaking, or to relate with these supposed First Company Veterans.

The Librarian and Biologis sounded identical, like a pair of angsty teens, while Castamon's voice conveyed neither experience, nor authority- he just sounded kind of whiny...

Some flaws but plenty to enjoy

I found this a really interesting one. The story is quite straightforward but has some interesting sub-plots that add to the human element. I really liked the portrayal of the nerdy Apothecary, as much a scientist as a soldier. I also liked the depth of the Lieutenant, not just a leader but a mentor who encouraged rationality; and the grizzled veteran waiting for a worthy death - not an archetype commonly portrayed amongst the Ultramarines. I thought the the pacing of the plot sometimes undermined the drama though, which lessened the tension at times. Some of the dialogue between characters was also a bit hokey, but only some. I thought Theo Solomon was a fantastic narrator, although I thought he made the Apothecary and the Librarian sound a bit too anxious at times. Even though Astartes can experience doubt and fear of failure, they aren't supposed to show it, or even be capable of doing so. I get that there was meant to be a greater level of psychic disruption coming from the Tyranids, but I don't think the impact on the Astartes was explored enough in the story to explain the distress - so maybe it's more the fault of the author rather than the narrator. In any case, I know this is now sounding more like a "well actually..." than a review so I'll leave it there. Overall I enjoyed it, and it definitely brought home how overwhelming a threat the Tyranids are - now more than ever.

Scratches that itch

Solid story but nothing groundbreaking. Does however scratch that 40K itch if you’re struggling to find something to listen to/read. Solid mix of space marine and human stories, either way 3.5-4 out of 5 for me.

Enjoyable

I actually enjoyed the book and the narrator although I admit the narrator doesn't come across as a space marine as the voice is too soft.

Listening to all the carnage was satisfying and to see that no one was truly safe and plot Armour was minimal was a welcome change.

There is room for improvement and the characters can be painfully stupid at times but also so very likable. Really hope there will be a part 2.

Stupidest story ever

This is a terrible story, how can Ultramarines with century’s of experience and hypnoinductanation not know about genestealer cults, clearly this story was written by someone not following warhammer 40k story lines, it was painful to listen to and cannot recommend the book or the author.
