Det är midsommarafton och en riktigt varm dag. Gävle är förvandlad till en vacker försommarstad. En ung kvinna hittas inlindad i en filt på en dammig trottoarkant. Hon har ett stickmärke i vänster armveck och minns inget från de två senaste dygnen. Ambulanssjuksköterskan Erik Sandström åker motvilligt dit för att hämta henne - snabbt och utan vidare eftertanke avfärdar han henne som en hopplös missbrukare. Men det är något som inte stämmer. På sjukhuset upptäcker man skyhöga levervärden och spår av paracetamol i blodet, den verksamma substansen i flera vanliga smärtstillande mediciner. Kvinnan hämtas så småningom hem av sina anhöriga, men avlider kort därefter på grund av en förgiftad lever.
