Ces lettres furent sans doute écrites par Marianna Alcaforado, jeune religieuse du couvent de Beja au Portugal qui fut séduite et abandonnée par un jeune officier français, Mr de Charmilly, envoyé en renfort de l'armée portugaise, qui à ce moment-là combattait contre l'Espagne (différents combats entre 1663 et 1668). Ces lettres, qui ont plus de 350 ans nous touchent encore aujourd'hui, par leurs accents de vérité, par cette passion dévorante, par cette rage amoureuse qui les traversent, et entre les lignes, on peut lire aussi la condition des femmes à cette époque. (Elle faisait partie cependant des plus grandes familles portugaises.)
