Publisher's Summary

From acclaimed author Steve Robinson comes a thrilling new Jefferson Tayte mystery.

When genealogist Jefferson Tayte is hired to prove the identity of a black sheep in his client’s family tree, he unwillingly finds himself drawn into a murder investigation with nothing more to go on than a 150-year-old letter and a connection to a legendary ruby that has been missing for generations.

As more letters are mysteriously left for him, Tayte becomes immersed in a centuries-old tale of greed, murder and forbidden love that takes his research from the wilds of the Scottish Highlands to the colour and heat of colonial India.

A dark secret is buried in Jaipur, steeped in treachery and scandal. But why is it having such deadly repercussions in the present? Can Tayte find the ruby and prevent the past from repeating itself before it’s too late?

This is the seventh book in the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mystery series but it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

different and most interesting

Finding treasure may sound a little overdone in literature over the centuries, and new books along those lines may sound just too corny. But this is very well written with excellent characterisation and some important differences. It is thoroughly enjoyable, often gripping, and entertained me on many cold nights in bed. Recommended

Another hit!

Once again, Steve Robinson has held my attention for nearly 10 hours! I always hate starting one of his books, because I know that when I do, it will soon be over! I was thrilled to find that Jefferson Tayte is still on the job and using his unique knowledge and skills to solve the crime and save the day! Letters from the Dead is well written, smart and entertaining! Highly recommended!

I'm so glad they used the same narrator for this entire series of books... he does wonderful accents and reads very smoothly. Very engrossing books!

Exceeded My Expectations

I wanted something a little mindless to relax my brain. This was decidedly more complex - even a bit convoluted - but it was interesting enough to hold my interest for a cross-country drive. By far the best "genealogical," mystery I've discovered thus far.

Excellent in all respects

An excellent installment in a consistently excellent series. I greatly enjoy Jefferson Tayte's likeable, understated, good-hearted character, and the details of how he plies his genealogical detective trade add extra interest to an already interesting set of circumstances. The time-spanning mystery was masterfully handled. Both the past story and the present story kept you interested every step of the way and were connected in well-woven, believable ways. Both plots kept you guessing right up to the end. The story was well paced and the characters well rendered. The narration was also excellent, Simon Vance does a wonderful job as always. This is one of those lovely, rare books where you don't have to think "this was great except for…" it was just great all the way around. I hope there will be many more installments in future; I will definitely read them!

Letters from the Dead

I’d like to cheer Simon Vance for doing a great job keeping up with all the characters and the variations of their Scottish accents. Not an easy job!

I love the dual story lines that are a hallmark of this series. Tracking the people living in India under British rule and then those searching for answers while in modern day Scotland living in a decaying castle/estate that is a continual money pit.

Finding worthwhile leads in your family tree search is always an enjoyable pastime, but this time it is proving deadly to those around JT.& company.

Brilliant book all round !

The plot line is amazing, the characters are great and the story is told in both the past and present which Mar Robinson pulls off seamlessly. I was hooked from the start of this book and there are enough twists and turns to keep you busy. It was also beautifully narrated and with just the right amount of an accent to play each part well. I have read The JT novels from book one and eagerly await each new novel every year, Steve Robinson doesn’t let you down and each novel reaches new heights.. Letters from the Dead is of such a high standard that it’s hard to see where Mr Robinson will go from here, he is a skilled storyteller and his talent is something I am only too happy to enjoy every year with the release of each new novel. Congratulations Mr Robinson on yet another amazing novel !

welcomed return

It's like Tate has not been away. The story and theme are as the previous 6 books. The story as usual runs simultaneously with the past. The story keeps you gripped from the start with plenty of twists. Must mention the narration is wonderful as usual, really bringing the story to life.

Keeping up the standard

Another in the series. Like the others it didn't disappoint. Good story excellently performed by Simon Vance.
