Publisher's Summary

In the chilling new crime novel from award-winning author Jane Casey, Detective Maeve Kerrigan and the murder squad must navigate a web of lies to discover the truth....

A murder without a body.

Eighteen-year-old Chloe Emery returns to her West London home one day to find the house covered in blood and Kate, her mother, gone. There may not be a body, but everything else points to murder.

A girl too scared to talk.

Maeve Kerrigan is young, ambitious and determined to prove she's up to her new role as detective sergeant. She suspects Chloe is holding something back, but best friend Bethany Norris won't let Maeve get close. What exactly is Bethany protecting Chloe from?

A detective with everything to prove.

As the team dig deeper into the residents of Valerian Road, no one is above suspicion. All Maeve needs is one person to talk, but that's not going to happen. Because even in a case of murder, some secrets are too terrible to share....

Absolutely fabulous crime writer just getting better

Thoroughly enjoyed yet another clever story by Jane Casey. Plausible plot that keeps you guessing combined with my favourite detectives and a fantastic narrator is audible experience at its best. Loved it!

Great read

Not the best book in the series. Rob broke my heart again though! Love Josh’ character, he’s so protective of Maeve. I hope Maeve gets some thrill back in to her life though in the next book.

Love Jane Casey’s writing

I wish I hadent started at the end and worked backwards. Caroline Lennon is a terrific narrator and does voices really well. But I hate the last scene. That rotten rob and his blue eyes.

Not my favourite in the series

Not my favourite Maeve Kerrigan book. Felt the story wasn't as plausible but it was an easy listen. Narration as good as ever though. Still looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Good read but let down by lead characters

The crime story is ok but the Derwent/Kerrigan thing was mismatched to previous stories and really let down the thread of previous books. After all the things they have been through together it’s probably time she stopped whining about him and saying he can’t be trusted and she doesn’t like him - irritating. His domestic bliss is a bit odd too.

best audio book yet

The most enjoyable audio book I have listened to yet. The plot gets a bit OTT at the end but still really a great listen. Had me from the first chapter.

Another excellent Jane Casey thriller

Loved it all, bar a few glaring procedural errors which it seemed unbelievable that a bright spark like DS Kerrigan ...or indeed even a child would make as belied common sense. Tour de force performance from the dulcet toned Caroline Lennon. Great layered plot that just kept on going and enjoyed it 98% to the max minus the couple of niggles that beggared belief. Can't wait for the next one.

The best in this series so far. Brilliant!

Which character – as performed by Caroline Lennon – was your favourite?

The narration was excellent, as is always the case with Caroline Lennon. Each character was voiced perfectly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! It was hard to put down.

Any additional comments?

This is a fabulous, engrossing read/listen. The strory is rich with layers and twists. The characters are wonderfully drawn, and very engaging as always. Maeve and Josh are on great form. The author did play a little fast and loose with clinical confidentiality (a Psychologist talking openly about the case of a live, discharged patient, to Police Officers who call in for a chat, with no Court Order), and the Data Protection Act (bank giving detailed information about a personal account, simply in reponse to a Police Officer asking)! However, although this would have grated in a book of lesser quality, I was instantly ready to suspend disbelief, due to how much I was enjoying the story.

Well narrated crime story

The narrator is excellent and the story kept me intrigued, although the pay off wasn't very satisfying.

Another brilliant book in a fab series

Jane Casey can do no wrong in my eyes. This is one of my favourite series, and I love Maeve Kerrigan. She is now a DS and is called to a house where there is blood everywhere but no body. Once again Maeve is working with Josh Derwent (I would like to see them get together!), but also has to supervise a new DC who gets on her nerves right from the start! The storyline is complex, well plotted, and had me hooked from the start. The pace was quick, the building tension kept me listening long past my bedtime, and there were plenty of twists. As with all the books in this series the characters are all really well fleshed out although most of the ones in this book are truly horrible (apart from the lovely Maeve and Derwent). As always, the narration by Caroline Lennon was perfect.

Exciting well written and well read

I have now listened to all the Maeve Kerrigan books and really enjoyed them all. Jane Casey weaves interesting and exciting stories. I love the interaction that Maeve has with her colleague Josh. I like the subtle romantic element to the stories but it does not impinge at all on the brilliantly written story. The police knowledge and the great banter makes for a really good amusing and sometimes laugh out loud listen. The books are very well read in a soft Irish lilt by Caroline Lennon. Her interpretation of Maeve and the other characters is great. I cannot wait for the next book and would heartily recommend this series to anyone - start at the beginning though it makes for a better enjoyment. I honestly feel as though I lost a friend when I finished this book.

Another cracker

This series just gets better. I’m so glad the serial stalker isn’t in this episode, it was the most unreal part of Maeve’s story. The twists and turns, police discoveries and assumptions, are all laid out so you can follow the reasoning. The motives are understandable, and it was an extremely clever story. The narration is excellent, as always. Highly recommended.
