Da er geistig alle Berufsmaler um Turmeshöhe überragte, brachte er, wenn er malte, eine Kraft des Denkens, Sehens und Fühlens mit, wie sie keiner dieser Berufsmaler hatte. Nur das befähigte ihn, einer ganzen Künstlergeneration den Weg zu weisen. Nur das ermöglichte ihm, Probleme in Fluss zu bringen, an die vor ihm noch keiner rührte.
