Dem nüchternen Blick des Wissenschaftlers, der eine rein pathologische Fallstudie zeichnet, entgegnet der Erzähler mit Sympathie und Mitleid und vermittelt so auf eindringlichste Weise die traurige Leidensgeschichte Lenzens.

Büchner selbst über Lenz: "Ich habe mir hier allerhand interessante Notizen über einen Freund Goethes, einen unglücklichen Poeten namens Lenz verschafft, der sich gleichzeitig mit Goethe hier aufhielt und halb verrückt wurde. Ich denke darüber nach, einen Aufsatz in der deutschen Revue erscheinen zu lassen. (...) Es gibt hier Leute, die mir eine glänzende Zukunft prophezeien. Ich habe nichts dawider." (1835)

Bevor diese "glänzende Zukunft" jedoch beginnen konnte, starb Büchner 1837 an Typhus. Lenz wurde posthum veröffentlicht.
