Büchners psychologische Erzählung erschien im Jahr 1839. Eindrucksvoll beschreibt sie die Etappen der psychischen Erkrankung Lenz'. Arnold Zweig sah in dieser Erzählung den Beginn der modernen europäischen Prosa: "Kein Franzose und kein Russe legt moderner einen seelischen Sachverhalt offen hin."
