Die Erzählung schildert einen Lebensabschnitt des psychisch erkrankten Sturm-und-Drang-Dichters Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751 bis 1792). Mit einer innovativen Erzähltechnik ermöglicht Georg Büchner dem Leser ein Miterleben des Wahns, der entgegen damaliger Einschätzungen nicht als selbstverschuldet erscheint, sondern als nachvollziehbare Reaktion auf die umgebende Welt. Aus der Sicht des psychisch Kranken konnte Büchner auch den Zweifel an Gott formulieren, ohne sich angreifbar zu machen. Wichtiger Bestandteil der Erzählung sind die von Lenz formulierten kunsttheoretischen Betrachtungen, die in ihrer antiidealistischen Ausrichtung auch das poetologische Konzept von Büchner kennzeichnen.
