Story
After the bloody battle of Colden Moor, the warlike highlanders had lost their independence. They lived in surly subservience to the Outlanders, and only a teenage girl survived to represent the line of kings: Sigarni. Sigarni the silver-haired. Huntress, whore, princess. All of these she was called. But those who pierce the veil of the future knew that a leader was coming to the North - a leader descended from Ironhand, mightiest of the highland kings.

The dictatorial Augurs - once thought of almost as gods - were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Publisher's Summary
The Legend
Druss, Captain of the Axe: the stories of his life were told everywhere. Instead of the wealth and fame he could have claimed, he had chosen a mountain lair, high in the lonely country bordering on the clouds. There the grizzled old warrior kept company with snow leopards and awaited his old enemy, death.
The Fortress
Mighty Dros Delnoch, protected by six outer walls, the only route by which an army could pass through the mountains. It was the stronghold of the Drenai Empire. And now it was the last battleground, for all else had fallen before the Nadir hordes.
And hope rested on the skills of that one old man....

Fantastic
I read this book as a young teenager and could not get enough of the story of heroism of men you doubted themselves but still tried to the occasion.
When I saw that the book was out in audio I bought it with some trepidation as it had been 15 or So years since I had read this books and was scared that it would not live up to an adult version of myself, All I can say get this book the is if anything better than I remember well read and had me riveted

Cult follower gained!!
I loved the book in its entirety.
it had the lot for me.
the subtle hint of magic never threatens to run away with the story, and the character's develop into so much more than i thought possible.
Im only saddened that David never continued with character progression in his books..
il miss Druss and Rehk.

why haven't you got this all time great yet??
Fantastic story, with great depth of character, fast paced but not to fast that you get lost. Druss is a figure among others who, by the end you feel like you know. I've got the paperback and read it over and over but still I had to get the audio book too.

What a Classic
As iconic as Lord of the Rings or Dune.
This is my all time favourite heroic fantasy book.
A must read for all fantasy fans. It’s iconic characters and battle scenes speak to the heart and freshen the mind of the reader.
When it first came out, this is one of those books that set the bar for the way heroic fantasy books were written in future.
On hearing it again all these years later, it was still entertaining to read.

THE BEST EVER
Heroes, friendships, love, hate, battles, redemption and a touch of the mystical and magical as only David Gemmell can tell it. Go and read it or have it read to you by Sean Barrett who is the only voice of Druss! Loved it the first time I read it and it sent me on my own quest to read and re-read everything written by David Gemmell. So glad it's on Audible now to enjoy :)))
