Viele verhängnisvolle Schicksalsschläge ereignen sich in dieser Lebenserzählung, und sie treffen in den meisten Fällen ungemein edle Menschen, die sich nichts vorzuwerfen haben, da sie schuldlos in Verstrickungen geraten sind, aus denen der Tod der einzige Ausweg ist. Erzählt wird das alles in der Sprache des 18. Jahrhunderts, die dem heutigen Hörer natürlich ungewohnt ist und ihm merkwürdig vorkommen wird. Gellerts Pathos ist nun einmal zeitgebunden und wer sich für diese Literaturepoche interessiert, wird es gern akzeptieren.
