Il s'agit d'un enregistrement d'un rêve, où le protagoniste est un officier militaire romain du pays vascon près de Pompelo . La campagne est, chaque année, ravagée par de terribles montagnards qui kidnappent des citoyens et accomplissent des rituels cruels lors d'un sabbat. Le narrateur souhaite mener une expédition militaire pour écraser ces montagnards, car un sentiment de mal imminent a enveloppé la campagne, en raison d'une émeute entre les citoyens et les montagnards.
