Autour d'eux se meut tout un monde, qui est l'image du monde féodal avec sa hiérarchie, ses castes, ses préjugés, ses mœurs et ses lois : le roi Noble, le lion, et dame Orgueilleuse, se femme ; Brun, l'ours, et Beaucent, le sanglier, conseillers du roi ; l'archiprêtre Bernart, l'âne ; Braiant, le taureau ; le bon sire Belin, le mouton ; Tardieu, le limaçon, brillant et preux chevalier, etc.
