"Le Muse inquietanti" è uno dei più noti e importanti lavori di Giorgio De Chirico, pittore metafisico che operò agli inizi del Novecento, famoso per le sue vaste piazze deserte dai colori accesi e per i misteriosi manichini che le abitano. De Chirico è, insieme a Carlo Carrà, il fondatore del "genere" metafisico, che indica una pittura di evocazione letteraria e di suggestione figurativa, un trattamento magico e scenografico che fu il prototipo per il surrealismo francese di qualche anno più tardi. Le Muse sono un omaggio a Ferrara, città che aveva adottato il pittore, e allo stesso tempo una critica all'arte contemporanea, che a De Chirico non andava a genio.
