Le storie di Munchausen, di origine popolare, furono raccolte da un autore anonimo nel 1781. Nel 1785 a Londra ne venne pubblicata una versione in inglese, ad opera di Rudolf Erich Raspe - quella che qui vi presentiamo - a cui ne seguì un'altra, in lingua tedesca, firmata da Gottfried Bürger.
