Les deux personnages vont heurter leurs visions du monde, l'une plus humaniste du naufragé et l'autre plus rude du "Loup des mers".
Recelant tous les ingrédients du roman d'aventure à succès et accueilli comme tel dès sa parution, il n'en est pas moins une œuvre profonde à visée universelle. Un des grands romans de Jack London où se côtoient la sauvagerie des conditions extrêmes et la complexité de la nature humaine cependant que l'entrée en scène d'une femme va offrir un tournant à ce singulier périple.
