Didn't enjoy it.

The book started off well, and the world-concept was interesting. The fight/action scenes were also generally well done (other than some discontinuities along the lines of the ones mentioned below). The narrator was also good.

All that said, there were just too many inconsistencies in the writing for it to be enjoyable for me. Example: one moment two characters were swapping stories to pass the time, the next moment it's observed that they've barely been talking to each other and there's tension between them. Another example: a character joins a new unit hours before a mission, someone else dies early in that mission, and later the first character mourns them and all the times they shared together. When???. These type of inconsistencies also frequently showed up in the characters' actions and motivations/mindsets as revealed via first person narration perspective. Finally, honestly, the storyline was pretty predictable.

It's too bad, because with some more polish, I think this could have been a decent book. But the interesting preview and publisher summary weren't borne out by the actual story, at least not in my opinion.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Classic space opera that keeps you wanting more!

I just found Greg Dragon and I like his style and story line in the (hoped to be) series.
This is space opera at its best. Although the science is a bit light, the action is good, the pacing is fast and the plotting but for a hiccup when Helga escapes from the Geralos, is smooth.
A coming of age for a young woman, Helga Ata, making her bones but it does not rely on flashbacks for back stories. This smooth progression helps keep your interest up (I did the entire book at one sitting).
The narrator, Cari Scholtens moves the story and successfully portrays the different characters convincingly.
The novel announces itself as first in the Lady Hellgate series, although there was a previous Lady Hellgate novel about 60% the length of this. I really enjoyed the tension between the protagonists over the obvious betrayal they faced. The question was resolved in good order but feeling had been strained and that situation will take longer to clear.
Good job Greg. Polish the next installment and stick with the performer and you will have a series with legs.
A good read.

What a great start to a new series.

What a great start to a new series. It starts out full of action and adventure and continues all the way through! Some of the twists and plots will get your blood pressure up, and that's a good thing. Can't wait to see what Greg comes up with next!

👍🏻

An enjoyable space opera, if you can ignore the inconsistencies, errors and predictable plot. Any actual science was sacrificed for lots of action. Which was fun but maybe not for everyone. I think with a little refining this series could be really awesome.

Really enjoyed the narrator. Wonderful performance. Brought the book to life.

Terrific storytelling!

I enjoy science fiction stories with likeable/relatable characters, characters which are flawed or have to rise above themselves or their circumstances. This story was quite engaging with plenty of action and adventure, intrigue, betrayal and character growth. The Audible book is awesome! I can hardly wait to listen to the next book. Entertaining space commando story

The story follows an elite space commando group and their latest recruit, Helga. The mission doesn't go according to plan and suspicions of a potential conspiracy start to emerge.
It's a good and entertaining story with the right amount of drama. The author doesn't hit us over the head with too many explanations, trying to hold our hand, things develop over the whole story and you get bits and pieces of the story's universe and its history.
The narrator does a great job giving the characters easily distinguishable voices and therefore makes it easy to follow along.
Will probably look at getting the sequels.

Old Fashioned Outer Space Adventure

Story was ok. I am enthused to read the next one. I loved the narrator. Her handling of accents was spot on. Good luck to both writer and narrator!

all in all, really good

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a great example of good sci fi. I found it unique, interesting and very entertaining. The narration is decently done. Not the best I've ever heard but still made for an engaging listen. All in all, I would highly recommend this book for any fan of the genre.

A solid sci-fi story.

A solid military sci-fi story, with good characters and an interesting story and setting.

The narration is well done and is easy to listen to. Each character sounds distinctive and the narration fits the tone of the story.

All in all this is well worth a listen.

Should have been born with wings

It starts like many other military S.F. books, young rookie pilot joining the elite team of the special forces squadron, the legendary Nighthawks. The seven man team knew and trusted each other, had worked together, were already a 'family'. She was new, young, and a woman who had, all her life, experienced rejection by virtue of her birth and didn't like the way they looked down on her. She had to prove herself to become one of them. But almost before she has a chance to do so, things change, throwing the whole story not just into a series of battling aliens (with whom the Alliance had been at war for more than a century) and pirates but also with a central mystery - why was everything going so wrong now?

Clearly written, with an host of well characterized protagonists, and excellent world building formed with a paucity of words, the story weaves it's way between characters and ships, suspicions and fighting, the brooding mystery becoming ever more prevelant. Fear is palpable. This is fighting for survival.

Narration by Cari Scholtens is good, not easy for a woman to give realistic voicing to a predominantly male range of characters. But she does it , and does it well, each being distinctive in tone and accent. The text reading between conversation is also steady, well paced with good intonation and conducted in the manner more of observer than participant, not getting excited when the action hotted up but leaving that part to the reader's imagination. It works well.

Last of the Nighthawks is the first in Greg Dragon's new series, Lady Hellgate, which will presumably follow the progress of our rookie, now much more experienced, into future adventures, a series i personally do not want to miss. My thanks to the rights holder who, at my reqhest, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. I am an admirer of the author's previous books, but this is one of his best. Good science fiction, and recommended.

Exciting new adventure

This book involves the development of a young girl who has been assigned to an elite military unit. She is the newest member and joins them after several missions where they have lost members. Her role as backup pilot quickly morphs into being a fighter in order for her to stay alive after the mission finds itself betrayed and almost destroyed.

The book is well written and the action top notch. It reveals the inner struggles of a futuristic battle to defeat an alien invader and the courage of the people and also the betrayal from within.

The story is narrated exceptionally well and the narrator does an outstanding job with multiple voices and is clearly understandable.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

A great SciFi action story

This title had everything that I love, fast action, great story, likable characters and frequent twists and turns. I felt like the writer really brought the main characters to life and with the smooth narration it was easy to get immersed in the story. Upon finishing this audiobook I went straight to see if I could get the next one to be disappointed that it has not been released.
