About this listen

THE DAZZLING NEW NOVEL FROM THE MASTER OF CRIME

He had been here, that was clear from the marks in the dust. And he had been alone.

In a dying town, Ro Crowley waits for her son on the evening of his 21st birthday.

But Sam never comes home. His footprints in the dust of three abandoned houses offer the only clue to his final movements. One set in. One set out.

Five long years later, Ro returns to Carralon Ridge for the annual memorial of Sam's disappearance. The skeletal community is now an echo of itself, having fractured under the pressure of the coal mine operating on its outskirts.

But Ro still wants answers. Only a few people remain. If the truth is to be found in that town, does it lie among them?

I think my favourite so far. I’m still in the afterglow of another great listen. Wonderful narrator, gradual unveiling of the mystery- chefs kiss!!

Character led - excellent

It was very slow, I found it hard to keep focused on the story and characters. Listening to the book I’m usually doing other things while listening, I found I kept switching off to the story and having to rewind to re-listen.

Not Jane’s best

I loved all Jane Harper’s books, until this one. It was extremely difficult to finish, and if it was unknown author I would not have been bothered.

This is the story of family’s grief. Not unique in any way. I would not know which genre it belongs. There is not enough mystery to call it a thriller and it’s not good enough to call it social drama, as it only cover one person’s perspective, offering no real insight into any other characters. And the only thing we know about main character is her grief and her intelligence. It was reasonably narrated, although not as well as her previous books. I would not recommend this book, but I hope this usually marvellous author will find her inspiration in her next book.

Extremely slow moving book

This book didn’t disappoint. Lots of twists and turns. Great insight and understanding of character relationships.

Great read

Love Jane Harper but this one is the most mid work yet. Characters are good but it was hard to get invested with such a bleak setting and storyline.

Very slow, poor payoff
