Publisher's Summary

If simplicity is an art, then Dominique Loreau is a master. Having lived in Japan for many years and inspired by oriental philosophy, Dominique Loreau discovered the beauty of a life well lived through the art of simplicity. Her lifestyle rests on the principle of 'less is more' and imbues all areas of existence, from the material to the spiritual.

She captured her philosophy in the groundbreaking L'art de la Simplicité, which was a massive best seller in her native France and is now available in the English language for the first time.

Simplify your home, empty your wardrobe, abandon compulsive purchases, eat more frugally but better, take care of your body and mind. From the art of feeling well in your home to the art of feeling well in your body, this compelling and elegant book will transform your life and take you on an empowering journey to happiness.

You will feel energised, more confident and free. You will discover the essence of being truly alive and how to live a more centred life. One full of real pleasure, clarity and satisfaction.

Felt like I was being lectured to

There were a few points and suggestions that I enjoyed, mostly about minimalism in the home.
But once it got to generalised sweeping statements giving out health advice and fat shaming people it really started to annoy me. I’m a dietitian so I have a masters degree in nutrition and I can tell you that shaming people does not motivate them to make healthful changes.
It all seemed very black and white and “my way is the only way to live” including suggesting women should not wear colors and mostly black and white - very strange rambling content.

Mostly Drivel

I loved the blurb & sample, so had high hopes for this audiobook. It did start out really good with the minimalism stuff, but took a nosedive from there. It’s gets weirder & weirder. She speaks in absolutes. Like ‘only ever decorate in black, white, & grey’. I was downright disturbed by some of the advice. ‘Never help anyone, as they’ll never learn to flourish on their own if they don’t learn to help themselves’. Surely there’s many levels between helping someone out & enabling? What kind of community would we live in if no one ever helped anyone? And she recommends we can only be happy & relaxed if our apartments have only a bed, a couch, a table, & a laptop. She says we’ll be happy when everything around us is perfect. Striving for perfection sounds like a recipe for unhappiness to me. Some of it did make me giggle. Like that watching the news or other rubbish tv doesn’t bring anything to your life & is like chewing gum for your eyes/mind. As I got further into it, I started thinking this book may even be some kind of witty satire, but sadly I think she’s being serious. I’d rather not have used a credit on this & won’t be listening again, or recommending.
