Pubblicato nel 1922, questo “giallo” che fa parte della prolifica vena di Edgar Wallace dimostra, di fronte al lettore di oggi, tutta la sua età. Incoerenze, ingenuità, colpi di scena improbabili e sopra le righe, fino al surrealismo, che, però, fanno venire il dubbio (più che giustificato, se confrontato con le altre opere dello scrittore) che Wallace stesso abbia voluto ironizzare sullo stereotipo della donna “bellissima e spietata”. Ma soprattutto, dietro queste pagine, c’è tutta Hollywood, per cui Wallace ha scritto molte sceneggiature. C’è Hollywood con i suoi scenari (Londra e la Costa Azzurra), con i suoi personaggi (la fanciulla graziosa e ingenua, l’avvocato intrepido), e , soprattutto, con l’immancabile lieto fine, che non si nega perfino alla bella criminale.
