About this listen

In the tradition of Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë, debut author Julie Klassen delivers a compelling Regency Era novel brimming with authentic period details, vibrant characters, and enthralling plot twists. Banished from hearth and home, a vicar's 20-year-old daughter pays dearly for a single lapse in judgment. To avoid the scorn of local villagers, Charlotte Lamb wends her way to the forbidding Milkweed Manor on the outskirts of London. Concealing her identity, she finds refuge within the dank confines of this mysterious bastion of old secrets and new life. She soon encounters a former suitor, harboring secrets of his own. Firmly relying on God's strength, both resolve to protect their loved ones. But neither realizes the level of self-sacrifice this will require.©2007 Julie Klassen (P)2008 Recorded Books,LLC Christian Fiction Fiction Genre Fiction Romance

The ending had me in tears, it wasn't what I expected and I loved the unexpected twist, as the whole story was very emotional for me having lost babes myself.

A beautiful ending to an intriguing story

Julie Klassen never disappoints, such a sad tale that probably wasn't uncommon. spoiler alert: glad it has a happy ending as my heart aches for Charlotte.
Simon Pebble is an excellent narrator (one peeve, he often put an odd inflection on Charlotte s name which I found grating)
get it...it's well worth the time 😊

Poignant

Wow. What a story. This unique Regency romance sheds light on the darker and more difficult sides of life for unwed women in 19th Century London. It is incredibly well-researched and written. Bad things can indeed happen to good people and a fall from grace can be dire. My heart bleeds for Charlotte and the choices she finds herself having to make. It’s humbling to think this was commonplace for many of that era. The references to ‘Milkweed’ are poignant. The ending is tear-jerking and beautiful. This is one of my favourite JK books.

An eye-opening but beautiful story.

I couldn’t put this book down. Many twists and turns. Beautifully written. An insightful account of what happened to unmarried mothers in the 1800s

A beautiful winding love story. Who does Charlotte end up with?
