Comme il accepte, elle retourne s'installer dans la maison du médecin à Argenton tandis qu'il règle la liquidation de ses biens à Paris. C'est là qu'il découvre le journal qu'elle lui a laissé, dans lequel elle raconte sa vie en son absence.
