Quando Schiller invitò Goethe a collaborare alla sua rivista per rispondere alla domanda su come l'uomo possa stabilire una mediazione tra il mondo sensibile e il mondo soprasensibile, Goethe rispose che non poteva esprimersi in termini filosofici, ma voleva farlo con un grande quadro. E contribuì quindi alla rivista con questa Fiaba, in cui fece un affresco simbolico dei mondi.

Il mondo fisico è rappresentato da una riva del fiume, il mondo animico dal fiume, e il mondo dello spirito dall'altra riva, dove regna la bella Lilia (gli alchimisti definiscono il mondo dello spirito come "il regno di Lilia").

L'affresco riguarda quindi le nozze dell'uomo con lo spirito. Chi volesse approfondire ancora il tema, può farlo leggendo le conferenze di Steiner proprio su questo testo; ma la Fiaba, come dice lo stesso Steiner nella sua autobiografia, agisce nella coscienza dell'uomo anche leggendola così, senza analizzarla, proprio come è prerogativa di tutte le fiabe.
