El libro del Génesis habla de una escalera "apoyada en la tierra" cuyo "extremo toca el cielo" y de la cual suben y descienden los ángeles. Este subir de la tierra y bajar del cielo se le presenta al autor, tras la muerte repentina de su hijo, como una vía doble y simultánea para poder aliviar su dolor y acceder a la sabiduría. Paralelamente esta imagen le sugiere diferentes formas de pensar, una clara y sencilla, que poco a poco se va haciendo poesía, y otra, emocional, compleja e incierta, que se va convirtiendo en filosofía. Ambas se entremezclan en estas páginas, unidas en un corazón único que late en aquella zona donde el dolor ya es impensable.
