Nel paesaggio di acqua e nebbie della Bassa il commisario Soneri si trova a suo agio. Insieme con gli anziani del posto è tra i pochi a conoscere quel tratto del Po, a sapersi muovere tra gli argini,le golene e i casolari sparsi in una terra che sembra agitata da fantasmi.
Ma le cose stanno cambiando: gli speculatori rubano la sabbia del fiume, gli slavi pescano il pesce siluro e trafficano con le armi e c'è persino una banda che rapina i bancomat con l'esplosivo.
Stavolta però succede anche di peggio: nel giro di un giorno spuntano due cadaveri: un giovane ungherese e un ex comandante partigiano... Un'altra inchiesta per il commissario Soneri, in un romanzo dal gusto intenso e profondo.
