No creo que ninguna de mis aventuras con el señor Sherlock Holmes se haya iniciado de manera tan abrupta, ni tan teatral, como la que relaciono siempre con Los tres tejados. La puerta se había abierto de repente y había irrumpido un negro descomunal en la habitación. Habría resultado un personaje cómico si no hubiese sido terrorífico, pues iba vestido con un traje gris de cuadros muy pintoresco y con una corbata suelta de color salmón. Adelantó su cara ancha y su nariz aplastada hacia nosotros mientras sus torvos ojos oscuros, con un destello velado de malicia en ellos, iban de uno a otro.
