Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) stammte aus einer Musikerfamilie und studierte am Mailänder Konservatorium. Obwohl seine ersten Opern zunächst keine großen Erfolge waren, wurden sie später weltbekannt. Puccini entwickelte die italienische Operntradition weiter und brachte auch exotische Themen auf die Bühne. Seine Künstleroper "La Bohème" wurde 1896 in Turin uraufgeführt und gilt als Puccinis Meisterwerk.
