Mowgli jako małe dziecko został porwany przez tygrysa Shere Khana. Ze szponów drapieżnika uratowały go wilki, które przygarnęły chłopca do swojego stada i stały się jego rodziną. Oprócz nich wychowywała go sprytna czarna pantera Bagheera i niedźwiedź Baloo.
