Der Schwere Prospektorenraumer SCARDANELLI operiert in abgelegenen Tiefen der Galaxis. Als die Crew nach langem Überlichtflug die Schlafkojen verlässt, muss sie feststellen, dass die Position des Schiffes unbestimmt ist. Die Telemetriedaten sind spärlich und sie ergeben absolut keinen Sinn. Auch Navigator Guardes, der das Schiff gesteuert hat, vermag nichts zur Aufklärung beizutragen. Auffällig ist jedoch, wie sehr sich Igor Nastow, der Bordkybernetiker, vor den Navigator stellt. Während die Crew noch darum kämpft, Licht in das Dunkel zu bringen, taucht in der sternlosen Ferne eine riesige kristallomorphe Struktur auf.
