Publisher's Summary

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system.

Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

Different but awesome.

At first I found the style this book is written in so different than the usual Horus Heresy novels that I have listened to so far (I'm doing the series in order). However Dan Abnett never fails to impress and soon I was wrapped up in it so much I couldn't stop listening to it; needing to know the next events. I'm not an Ultramarines fan but I felt their Shock. Their pain. Their loss. Their anger. Their vengeance!
Masterfully written and can't wait for more.
I am usually not a fan of Gareth Armstrong in his narrations as he can often give little scared child voices to space marines and doesn't do as much justice as other narrators of the Horus Heresy. However he did an excellent job in this novel! It's as if it was written for him to narrate.
Highly recommend this audio book!

Good but Jumps around alot.

Overall a good listen, do recommend. My only complaint is that it jumps around alot and it can be a bit jarring. The voice acting is well done but what is the fascination in this series with making Space Marines sound elderly? Most of them sound like they should be running a book shop in 1930s London, not a worrior in a grim dark universe (an issue with several books throughout this series, not just this one)

Lost track of the story

There were some great moments but the story just wasn't as good as some of the other books

A great addition to the Horus heresy

Great characters and good fun, give it a listen and see what it’s all about

Sensational

Look, it's a Dan Abnett book. The man is great at writing about war, sci-fi, shoes... This was no exception. Great author authoring at his authoriest.

Theoretical: This book is amazing

Practical: GET IT
I love the large-scale warfare portrayed through multiple POV, and the 'Mark of Calth', which is a great way of keeping track of WHEN each events happen. It pieces together so so well.
The narration is also brilliant. Mr Armstrong's calm but stern voice captures the core ideals of the Ultrasmurfs so perfectly.

Best Ultramarines

I think this book has the best presentation of Ultramarines and what they are/think like out of any warhammer book. They aren't generic space marines, they aren't goody twoshoes, they are ultramarines

Great.

I recommend reading/listening to this after First Heretic, which is also really good. As it adds just enough context to Lorgar and the Word Bearers to appreciate what's happening.

I love how the tone of the story changes as things become more chaotic.
It's a little difficult to follow some characters as it jumps around a bit. But it's got a lot going on, condensed into It's chapters that make it worth a go.

Incredible.

Truly incredible. A must have. The narrator was very good and certainly helped bring the intense atmosphere to life. A great story to listen to as an audio book from start to finish. Highly recommend.

Not bad, Not great

The Mark time periods really broke up the flow of the story in a pretty bad way, but overall it was Ok
