Píše se rok 1959 a dvanáctiletý Michel Marini prožívá první krizi v rodině. Rodiče se nemohou na ničem shodnout a bratr Franck přes jejich odpor narukuje do války v Alžírsku. Michelovým jediným útočištěm se stávají knihy a utajený šachový klub ve čtvrti Montparnasse, kde se scházejí uprchlíci z východního bloku a vyprávějí si jen stěží uvěřitelné osobní příběhy. Během několika let přichází Michel o iluze a předčasně dospívá, přesto se však stává právoplatným členem šachového klubu a jedním z nemnoha nenapravitelných optimistů.
