Publisher's Summary
It’s January of 1704, and Matthew Corbett continues his mission to Italy, accompanied by Hudson Greathouse and former enemy Professor Fell. They seek Brazio Valeriani and information about the mirror created by his father, the sorcerer Ciro. Legend claims the mirror can be used to summon demons from beyond.
But fate has other plans for Matthew as their ship is disabled by a pod of whales, and they seek refuge on a secluded island. The islanders welcome them with a massive feast, but all is not what it seems. As the island pulls them deeper into its influence, the castaways struggle to maintain their grip on reality, even their very identity. Matthew must keep his wits about him and solve the mystery enshrouding the other side of the island, where an active volcano looms and a secretive creature lurks.
The King of Shadows is the eighth installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon’s acclaimed series of historical thrillers featuring Matthew Corbett, a brave “problem-solver” who now faces a challenging foe that threatens to take over his most valuable resource: his own mind.

The Hunt for Brazio Veleriani
Having successfully completed his mission to retrieve and free Berry Grigsby from the darstardly spell, Matthew & Greathouse, in January 1704 embark on the journey to Italy seeking Brazio Valeriani and the sorcerer's mirror which legend claims can be used to summon demons from beyond. Fate, however, gets in the way and they are marooned on an island, which seems like a paradise but of course, all is not what it seems. We discover the back stories of Cardinal Black and Mac and Matthew needs to solve the mystery of the island, with its active volcano & a secretive creature lurking nearby.
Not as gripping as the earlier books imo but I do so enjoy the Matthew Corbett world.

Disappointed
I had so looked forward to this book but sadly I thought it not up to the usual McCammon standard. Robert McCammon is my favourite storyteller but the only thing that kept me going with this book was the fantastic narration of Edouardo Ballerini. I thought the story of Mac’s early life was wonderful and he could have written a whole book about this subject. The same with Cardinal Black. But really they were just fillers and the book would have hung together just as well, maybe better because they showed up the weakness of the main plot, without them. He is a master of description and can transport you to wherever he wants and it was no different here. We were definitely on the island, on the boat, close to the fire but I thought the story was weak, boring and contrived. I loved all the other Matthew Corbett books, Speaks the Nightbird being my favourite book of all time, but King of Shadows has completely put me off. I think the amazingly talented Robert McCammon can do a lot better than this.

Love Matthew Corbett
McCammon has an amazing talent for storytelling. His backstory for each character gives such depth and emotion. I will not give any spoilers except that I blew through this in 2 days. Now, the wait for the last one, which will be bittersweet

So disappointed!
I was looking forward to something good happening to the main character, Matthew Corbett. This story was too dark and depressing. I have read all 8 books in the series so far and they got more and more gruesome and dark starting with Mr. Slaughter. I was hoping for more from the good guy and was very disappointed with the direction the author is going with this series. I don't think I'll bother with any more of them. It's too bad because Matthew Corbett is a wonderful character.

Not my favorite
Definitely not my favorite in this series, but good none the less. Why is it that in every other novel Matthew speaks several different languages but in this one only English? Weird! Looking forward to the next book…..I will keep reading this series as long as it goes! As always, impeccable narration!!

Interesting, yet engaging
This installment was somewhat lacking in story progression. The writing was enjoyable and the narration was fantastic, but the topic/situation hung too long on what could have been a shorter diversion. However, the back story of certain characters was fantastic and long overdue. I’d love to see more of this in future installments, or possibly side novels based solely on the various characters. Overall, I was pleased and look forward to the next book.

It shouldn’t have been a Corbbit book
It would be ok as a stand alone story. But did nothing for the series. And I had figured it out immediately. So I truly hope the next book in this series is as good as most of the rest. And it would really been very interesting if Matthew really does deal with actual unexplainable paranormal

Unsatisfying
I love this series, however I felt this book really had no ending. It just stopped, with hints of a future adventure, but with so many loose ends. I was disappointed.

Waiting for it... But let down...
I’ve been waiting to read this book for awhile. The Matthew Corbett series is one of my favorites. McCammon weaves a wonderful story. I was hooked after Speaks the Nightbird. And I have read all the others and fully enjoy them. However I was a bit disappointed that there was no resolution to the plot. It just seemed to fizzle out and leave me wondering if I missed something in the story. And Barrie was a character very much missed. Edoardo Ballerini is a wonderful narrator. His acting makes the story come alive. I’ll be waiting for the next installment, Leviathan.

Loved it.
Love the Corbett series and this one was exceptional character exploration with its usual suspense and mystery. I liked this one more than Cardinal Black.

What was the point of this one?
Very disappointed with this, the penultimate book in the series. The writing is good, still evocatively descriptive and well researched but there's just no real story here. It feels like 3 novellas edited into one book and by the end of it nothing has happened to advance the plot to the 'endgame' (except for the final short chapter which could have been added at the beginning of the final book). Two massive back story sections derail the limited main story without adding anything to it. Yes, interesting in their own right but not here. If you skip this one and go from the 7 to 9 just add the words 'they travel to Italy with a short detour on the way' to replace this one and you won't miss anything significant. With so little plot advancement in this one there's a lot to do in the last book to bring the series to a satisfying conclusion.

Always a good yarn
I have read each book in succession and this was by far the least enjoyable. It seemed a filler and was not necessary. Please can we get the final book soon as I’m sure this will be up to the wonderful standard we know and love.

Uhhhh, eh?
Started off well. Usual characters, nice premise, great narration as always but the story got lost and at the end I was left unsure what I’d just spent hours of my life listening to. Love this series but not entirely sure what was going on. Maybe the next one will be back on track!

Absolutely brilliant.
This follows Matthew Corbett, 'problem solver' in the Matthew Corbett series.
I'm not sure where it sits in the series (we learn about previous characters back story's) but I didn't really care. It's been a while since I finished his last in the series. This reminded me what an excellent story teller this author is. Plus it's humourous too, in parts. It centre's around Corbett who becomes stranded on an island after the ship he is on becomes unrepairable. On first inspection it appears to be paradise, populated by friendly people. But all in not as it seems......
Absolutely first class narration.
I'm off to listen to the series of books all over again.

Entertaining but.......
this doesn't feel necessary as part of Matthew's story!
That said, I enjoyed the narrative and the performance. it just felt like a bit of a filler!

Great story. worth waiting for.
Great story. worth waiting for. Wonderful how we learn more about characters who we had previously seen as just evil. McCarron evokes sympathy and understanding for them. One feels that this is not merely a great story, but also a lesson in human nature and how we are are all shapes by the course of our lives, sometimes into something that barely resembles how we were in our youth.
