Dahiana Carabali ist elf Jahre alt. Sie wächst in einem Vorort der Dreimillionenstadt Cali in Kolumbien auf, unter schwierigen familiären Verhältnissen, wie die meisten der Kinder dort. In dieser Umgebung wäre auch der Architekt Andres Bäppler groß geworden. Seine Mutter ist Kolumbianerin und lebt in Cali. Als er fünf Jahre alt war, holte ihn jedoch sein deutscher Vater gegen den Willen der Mutter nach Deutschland. Mit 20 Jahren besuchte Andres Bäppler erstmals wieder seine Mutter in Kolumbien und war schockiert von den Verhältnissen in seiner Heimat. Viele der Kinder dort, so stellte er fest, haben schon alleine deshalb keine Chance, weil sie nicht zur Schule gehen können. Es dauerte weitere 20 Jahre, bis er einen Entschluss fasste, der sein Leben völlig ändern sollte - und auch das von Dahiana.
