Blickt man aus der Vogelperspektive auf Karlsruhe, versteht man, warum Karlsruhe auch die "Fächerstadt" genannt wird. Vom Zentrum, dem Schlosse aus, streben 32 Straßen und Alleen strahlenförmig in alle Himmelsrichtungen. Das erste Stadtgebiet bildeten, einem Fächer gleich, die neun nach Süden laufenden Straßen.
Mit dem Bau seiner neuen Residenz Karlsruhe, mitten im Hardtwald, erfüllte sich der Markgraf von Baden-Durlach Karl-Wilhelm einen lange gehegten Wunsch nach einer modernen Stadt. In Durlach, seinem vorherigen Sitz, verweigerten die Bürger den Ausbau der Karlsburg, die Vergrößerung der Parkanlagen und die Modernisierung der Stadt. Am 17. Juni 1715 war Grundsteinlegung für die am Zeichenbrett entworfene Stadt.
