It was the end of World War II. FDR's New Deal had redefined American politics. Taxes were at an all-time high. The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had created a fear of total annihilation. The rise of secret government agencies and sanctions on business had many watching their backs. America's sense of freedom was diminishing... and many were desperate to take that freedom back.

Story
Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. Publisher's Summary
Mega-City One, 2080. Judge Joe Dredd's first year on the streets as a full-eagle Judge. Bred for justice, trained in law, Dredd's no helpless rookie, but he's not the seasoned veteran we know either. Three tales follow the first adventures of the future city's greatest lawman. With an introduction by the Mighty Tharg!
"City Fathers": The brutal murder of a Justice Department-sanctioned spy uncovers something new and dangerous in the sector's murky black market. Unless Dredd can stop it, chaos will be unleashed.
"Cold Light of Day": A savage killing spree results in the deaths of two highly-regarded Judges, and many consider Dredd to be responsible: a decision he made five years earlier - while he was still a cadet - has come back to haunt him.
"Wear Iron": "Wear iron, that's the rule." Paul Strader is a stick-up man, and a stone cold professional. But when he gets in over his head, he has to risk everything on the word of a corrupt lawman and break every rule he has. Every rule but one....
Author bios: Michael Carroll, Al Ewing and Matthew Smith are three celebrated novelists and Dredd comics writers. Smith, also the editor of 2000 AD, has written two previous novels for Abaddon and Black Flame and the comics series Dredd Year One for IDW. Ewing is the author of The Fictional Man for Solaris and five novels for Abaddon. Carrol is the YA author of Quantum Prophecy and The New Heroes series.

Well written, well read
Bought this on a whim and was not disappointed. I always admired Judge Dredd and the stern focused attitude he takes towards the law. Year one really brings out the characters and contrasts between Joe Dredd and his genetic twin Rico. The narrator has an excellent voice for this type of role and voices the twins in a gruff but opposite fashion bringing the characters to life.

Dredd is Dredd.
This is a good set of Dredd stories, but not really as advertised. If you are looking for Dredd learning as a young judge you will not find it here. Dredd is just as much a machine in these stories as he is in any others.

Like detailed 2000AD progs in your head
Long time reader of the Megazine and 2000AD. I simply love these books. If you read any of the comics and know the world of Dredd you'll be right at home, and see the story and setting playing out like a comic in your head.
The narration is excellent. First time listening to this narrator and the first minute I was unsure, but he turned out to be really, really good at voicing Dredd and the other characters. I want more!

Great performance and hit-or-miss writing
Okay. So this is kind of frustrating. This book has 3 different authors so that’s already going to chance things up. You only get to sample one of those authors, and I’d argue the better of the three. I started off really enjoying this book, but then it tapered away and by the end I wasn’t even sad it was over.

Three solid Judge Dredd stories well read
Three 2000ad writers do a great job of putting their own spins on the early days of Judge Dredd. Each of the three stories differ in structure, are well paced and enjoyable, keepimg my interest throughout. A nice showcase for the different writer styles, and in line with the anthology style storytelling of the comics.
The three stories were originally written as stand alone, however it would have been a nice touch if there was minor interlinking, though this is a minor quibble.
Jordan Harold, the reader, does a great job of the performance, the characters are played well, enhancing the writers dialogue. Special kudos for having Rico and Joe so similar and yet so easily distinguishably different.
A strong recommendation for any Judge Dredd fans, or anyone looking for a fun crime romp.
I hope there will be more in this series.

Almost better than the comics!
As an avid reader of the comics, I was very pleased with the presenation. Jordan Harrold does a nice job of voicing the different characters and the adaptation of these stories from the comics was very well done, even if at first I had a hard time. After about the third chapter, I was completely immersed but some of that may have been because of previous exposure to the comics. Either way, Year One did not disappoint!

Borag Thungg Earthlets!
How I remember waiting for the latest edition of 2000AD to drop through our front door every week. It had Harlem Heroes, Flesh and a re-vamped Dan Dare all preceded by Tharg's traditional welcome. Out of all of the stories and the heroes it contained though Judge Dredd is the most celebrated. The toughest character in the toughest of environments, Mega-City One. The unique brand of the dystopian background and the Judges with their utterly ruthless dispensation of justice never failed to excite. Of course, it's always risky when such nostalgic icons are re-visited, after all, who can forget the awful 1995 film which probably gives Sylvester Stallone nightmares to this day.
This audiobook though is in a completely different class, each of the authors has captured the spirit of the story very well though I would say stories two and three by Ewing and Carroll probably capture the madcap comic book vibe of the original slightly better than Smith's opener.
Jordan Harold does a great, deep-throated Dredd and the whole thing breezes past extremely quickly. This is one I'd definitely recommend to those who enjoyed the comic-book version and I hope there will be more to come!

Dredds voice is hard to do!
Dredds voice is hard to do, but easy to overdo. I think the narrator did a great job. I was really impressed with the division between the very similar voices of Joe Dredd and his brother Rico. it really gave the little extra touch to show what divides the brothers!

What a great way to revive those 1980's comic book hero's we all moved. I remember Dredd & Rico slugging it out within the pages of Tharg's 2000 AD edition. A well read story which helped immerse the listener within the world of Megacity One.
Well worth it!

Good fun
I rated this pretty high, but it deserved to be. I am not saying its highbrow literature that should be studied, but it is the most fun I have had from a book I have listened to in a while. The narration was great and Dredd sounded like I would expect Dredd to sound.
Each of the three tales are fine additions to the stories I was familiar with from reading 2000ad in my youth. The last story in the book being the most impressive.
Highly recommend to anyone that is a fan of the comics.
