1930: Der unehelich geborene Josef ist eine Schande für seinen Großvater und bekommt dies täglich zu spüren. Seine Kindheit ist geprägt von Angst und fehlender Nähe. Erst nach einem Umzug erfährt er in einer neuen Nachbarsfamilie Anerkennung und Zuneigung. Da ist vor allem Wilhelm, der ihn fördert und schützt, und Josefs Leben scheint sich endlich zum Guten zu wenden. Aber der arglose Junge ahnt nicht, dass hinter Wilhelms Freundlichkeit mehr steckt. Der aufstrebende SA-Mann formt Josef zu seinem ergebenen Helfer und benutzt ihn dazu, die Bewohner des Ortes auszuspionieren. Josef geht voller Stolz in dieser Mission auf. Doch dann erfährt er etwas, das sein bisheriges Leben aus den Fugen geraten lässt.
