Story
Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Story
A psychic without an anchor. A student in trouble. A shooter on the loose. I’m Jonathan Bane, a licensed psychic who consults for the police. I routinely help the police put the bad guys away and, for that reason, the criminal world doesn’t like me much. My psychic ability prevents me from handling anything electronic - and I do mean anything, I fry it in seconds - so calling for help isn’t always a possibility. I need an anchor, a partner, but I’m resigned: It’s just wishful thinking. At least, I thought so until he walked through the door.

Story
When the vampire stalking me sent me a letter, I was prepared for my new life with the man I love to get thrown into chaos. But as the days stretch on and nothing happens, I become determined not to allow that monster to rule my life and decide that Marcus and I will move on. We can’t always allow the past to haunt us. If that includes pestering Marcus and harassing my fellow detectives, they’d better learn to love it because I’m not going anywhere, even if they like to remind me I’m the only human working in a department filled with vampires.

Now that Leland’s decided to give up his life as a hitman and take a walk on the mild side, we’ve been enjoying a simple life of taking down bad guys the legal way. I didn’t know he would be just as reckless as a PI, but it’s not my fault if I happen to enjoy helping him hunt down the occasional criminal. If only I could keep the house from being overrun by Leland’s gun shrine - or stop him from making our cases “more exciting” by terrorizing people into confessing. Overall, life seems perfect, right? Story
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Great fun!
- By Alan on 15-07-2020
Publisher's Summary
I’m rather used to the crazy cases, because let’s face it, most cops can handle the run-of-the-mill with their eyes closed. I’m only called in when the situation is weird or they need to solve the case fast.
This case is a little of both.
Someone’s attacking women as they get off of work, hitting them in the back of the head. What started as a case of battery has steadily built up to homicide. With three murders, six victims, and no leads, the Clarksville PD is desperate to catch the assailant. But there’s no real leads for us to follow, either, and for once my eyes can’t really help.
A madman running around attacking women is bad enough, but the police are demanding answers we can’t give them, and they’re not taking no for an answer. It’s pushing us all past our limits, and frankly, I don’t know what’s going to break first: the case or Donovan’s patience.

Crazy good and a lot of fun!
A few months ago I listened to the first book in this series and I fell head over heels for these characters and the world AJ Sherwood created and couldn’t wait to spend more time in it. I was soo happy when this book was released. Again, the title of the book is quirky – and kind of fitting to Jon in a way, and it definitely fits the case. And while it is a new case I still urge you to start from book one to really get to know the world and characters to get to know them and their backstory, and some subtle – and not so subtle hints. Jon and Donovan have come far, and still have ways to go. They are a great match for each other, and while it at times can feel very one sided it’s clear that they both are what the other needs. Their relationship doesn’t get much page time in this book, it kind of took a backseat to the case. I feel the story as a whole wasn’t as strong as book one. Parts of it were resolved too quickly and easily and I wished they were more fleshed out. But you know what? I had a great time anyway! So… elephant in the room…. This book has, due to tragic circumstances a different narrator from the first book. Lloyd Thomas is a new narrator for me and also to the field it seems. This is usually a bit of a gamble, and starting in the middle of a series will never be easy – especially considering the large shoes he had to fill. This gamble though, paid off – big time. You can’t tell he only has a few books in his repertoire. He narrates with a surety of someone well versed in the field and he hits so many of my high points; he differentiates between characters, has great pacing, adds that little extra with sound effects for phone calls, he also narrates with passion and really connects with the characters and makes the listeners connect with them as well. The book is narrated from both Jon and Donovan’s POV and I really loved how Thomas did that. Most narrators narrate a book in their regular voice, only modifying it for dialogues to keep track of who says what. That’s not the case here. Everything told from Donovan’s POV is told in Donovan’s deeper voice, descriptions, monologues and what not. I find that I really enjoyed it. It’s something simple that so clearly shows us who the listener is following, connecting us to the characters and the story that much more. With this book Thomas clearly shows what he’s capable off and I can’t wait to listen to more of his productions in the future, because I hope there will be many more. A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review for Loev Bytes.

I like Jon and Donovan so much
I love these characters and I love the story. I have mixed feelings about the narrator but I found it hard nor to compare him to Kenneth Obi who narrated the first book. I miss the deep rumble that Kenneth did for Donovan. This narrator gives the same voice to every character. It’s hard sometimes to tell Jon and Donovan apart, and while I can say that this narrator did a much more natural sounding southern accent than Kenneth did, not all the characters are meant to have southern accents. I do very much like the way this narrator changes the voice when the voice is being heard through the phone.

I read these books before the audio came out for the first two. Personally I don't like the narration on the other one; I prefer this performer. My only criticism is that sometimes the difference voices sound similar, but otherwise it's good. I love this author's work. I really hope we get the Assassin books on audio! Recommended.

love this book so much!
granted, this is not my favorite from the "jon's mysteries" series, but i still love it more than a good chunk of other books. good mystery, good romance, and gotta love jon and don for a multitude of reasons. narration was pretty good, not great. i didnt like that he phased in and out of accents so randomly. his voice reminded me of an old noir heavy smoking detective. still, the read was pretty good overall and i wouldnt hesitate to listen to this again.

Jon does it again!
I love this series about, psychics, finding friends, falling in love and catching the bad guys 💕 I will say that although the story is awesome, Lloyd Thomas does not due justice to it. The first book was read by Kenneth Obi. His voices and characters are far superior, so this was a bit disappointing from a listening perspective. Still a well written story overall.

Why the change?
I regreted the change of the narrator, took me a while to get used to the new guy. He didn't change his voice as much, so it was sometimes hard to discern who's who. The story was great, though, so no way I was putting this book away (though I've already read it and knew what was coming).

I love this series
its hard to find a psy-cop type book i love, but I did with this one. I bought the first one right before Kenneth Obi passed away and it took me 4 months to be able to listen to him (I'd been listening to a kenneth obi narration when I actually got the news he'd passed away.) Lloyd is a good narrator, new to me because of this series, I'll be looking out for him again. the only reason I haven't given 5 full stars (wanted to put 4.5 stars) is that i listened to book 1 and 2 back to back. if Lloyd narrated both 1 and 2 I would have no problems. the story is fab! I am looking forward to more in audible from this series.

Better than book 1...
When I read the first book in this series I loved it but that usually meant higher expectations for the following books. In this case, the expectations were well placed, the second book is even better!!! Interesting new characters, (and the base for another story, I hope), great reaffirmation of Donovan and Jon as couple all in a storyline full of action. After loving so much the book, the cherry on top is to have the opportunity to reread It again and again hearing it in the amazing narration of Mr Thomas, who made an outstanding job with the voice acting and the management of all the characters. I can't wait for the audiobook of book 3. Loved it!!
