Publisher's Summary

Rockefeller was the quintessential industrialist. He created an industry out of nascent oil and gas start-ups during a time when none existed. His strategies and tactics may not have been approved by all, but he was certain he was doing God’s work.

We live in a world today that is based on the actions of John D. Rockefeller. Everything we do and how we live are the result of oil and its power. This inherent structure is based on what one man did when the oil industry was just starting off. He was strategic in his thinking, choosing to enter the refining side of the oil industry instead of the exploring and drilling aspect of it. He started with one refinery and then quickly bought up more than 90 percent of his competitors in the state within a few short years.

The story of Rockefeller as told in this audiobook provides a deep view of the oil industry and is told from a very human and real perspective. It looks at the events that shaped his life, from the shenanigans of his crooked father to the pleasant and philanthropic old man that he became. It is a story that is both instructive and interesting. It is a story of America itself told from the perspective of one of the world’s most successful men who rose from nothing and set the world on its path - a path that we still traverse today almost a century after his passing.

Listen to this audiobook and learn about the conversations and twists and turns that were part of John D. Rockefeller’s life. Feel what he felt as he navigated happiness and disappointment, clarity, and confusion.

Extraordinarily good biography

I am late to add my 2 cents to "Titan's" many reviews but I think it better cheered late then not at all. J. R. MacGregor's JD Rockefeller biography is superb in its depth and implications. The boy, the man, the business man, the maker of empire, the villain, and the extraordinarily far sighted philanthropist; his legacy is explored in fascinating depth. J. R. MacGregor The Original Titan as an altogether different character then I had previously imagined. The strength and character of JD Rockefeller is truly astounding no matter if you love or hate the man. J. R. MacGregor provides the record and evidences to properly posit your opinion of JD Rockefeller. For me, I give JD the highest marks in genius, ingenuity and persistence of character witnessed in a time when there were no rules or comparable non-nation state paradigms to build the truly enormous enterprise. This is long, superbly enjoyable listen. I have gifted it to several associates.

A short treatise

I really enjoyed listening the book John D. Rockefeller: A Life From Beginning to End. John D Rockefeller was a very interesting individual he was a ruthless competitor in the marketplace, but he was also highly religious. He conducted the businesses he ran by the rules in the United States at a time when creating monopolies was more or less acceptable. From a young child, he was taught religious values that included tithing and giving away your wealth was a godly practice. This book provided me many insights on the man John the Rockefeller. Of course, if I want to know more about the man I have to look at other books.

Faily good book.

It is the typical liberal historian, injecting his biases into what should be an impartial history. He quote Tarbel as if she were an impartial source

Well Written and Concise

John D Rockefeller (1839 – 1937) made his wealth in the oil industry and supporting industries. Many successful people have in inner drive, vision, and are born at opportune times that they can take advantage of. And many successful people are philanthropists. Rockefeller is considered the wealthiest American of all time.

I didn't want the book to end

My hat goes off to J. R. MacGregor with this masterpiece; I truly did not want the book to come to a close! I got everything out of this book and more. To realize the actual wealth and power this man harnessed was amazing. John D. had such a mystique and conducted himself like nobody I've ever known or heard . There are many lessons that one can learn by listening this fantastic tale of such an interesting and awe inspiring character . I have a feeling that I will be listening Titan again in the future.

Fascinating story

Fascinating story of a man and family somewhat unfairly vilified for being robber barons, when in fact they were probably the greatest philanthropists of all time. Well written.

I am only about one quarter

I am only about one quarter to one third through this very large book. I am pleasantly surprised at the excellent writing -- it's so good that it listens like a novel -- not at all dry or tedious like many biographies. He's an interesting man who lived in interesting times. I was attracted to the book after seeing a miniseries on TV that was also excellent. This writer is phenomenal and I will definitely check out his other books.

Outstanding

Outstanding, accurate, polictics-free biography.John D. Rockefeller has always been portrayed as the most cynical, unethical, absolutely ruthless businessman, blinded by his greed and love for profit. Guess what? Not quite. Yes he was the richest man of all time yes he was an absolute oligarch and monopolist; but he was also an extraordinary philanthropist. Many educational institutions and medical research facilities are still operating today thanks to the financial funds that he established 100 years ago. Excellent listen.

I had the special pleasure

I had the special pleasure of concluding this wonderful book sitting in my room in the Williamsburg Inn. I can not even begin to name the many other places I have visited and enjoyed that are attributable to his and his son's philanthropy. this is a long book, but I hated to see it end.
