Publisher's Summary

In recent years, Christians everywhere are rediscovering the Jewish roots of their faith. Every year at Easter time, many believers now celebrate Passover meals (known as Seders) seeking to understand exactly what happened at Jesus' final Passover, the night before he was crucified. Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as:

  • What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah?
  • What was Jesus' purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover?
  • And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, "This is my body...This is my blood"?

To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys - the Passover, the manna, and the Bread of the Presence - have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus' presence in "the breaking of the bread".

Wow you're missing out

The author himself says "these are not exigetical novelties". Meaning these have been teachings since the beginning of the church of Christ. They're beautiful and stir a fire in your belly. And it's so sad that Protestant teachers don't even get close. I mean, not close at all.

Amazing yet again from Brant Pitre

What I love so much about this Scripture scholar is the sense of discovery within the typologies he references using Scripture and the early Church fathers. Just amazing. Brant teases out the real meanings of the Bible verses and their more obscure references to today's cultural self-centeredness by bringing out the traditional Jewish and ancient Christian understanding that is both old and new to readers. This is another keeper.

I am a Protestant trying to learn more about the significance of the Eucharist and I feel that my eyes have been opened up ..

by this revelatory approach of going to the Jewish roots to explain the context and many layers of the Eucharist. Why did the Reformation leave this essential gift out of our theology? This makes so much more sense than tossing the real presence of Christ out as an arbitrary symbolic
Gesture. Thank you for clearly explaining this often neglected but very important request from Jesus himself and linking it to everlasting life!

This book is mind blowing. Awesome!

This book is amazing! It's very deep and I'm looking forward to listening to it a second time. I thought I understood the Eucharist fairly well and could defend it, but now I feel like I was only looking at one piece of a puzzle.

Most in depth book/resource on the Eucharist I've ever come across.

Worth listening to twice.

Strengthened my faith. Opened the meaning of Scripture. God has a wonderful plan of redemption revealed in Scripture, beginning in Genesis.

Absolutely astonishing

A great yet simple explanation of how indeed the Holy Eucharist is the fulfillment of Jewish Scripture but how there shall be no doubt it is the real presence of Jesus "until the end of times".

Fascinating, informative, and narrated well

I enjoyed listening to Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. I think the narrator did a wonderful job reading the book. I would be happy if he narrates other books to which I want to listen.

I think the book content was fascinating. I learned a lot of history. I enjoyed how connections were carefully explained between the Passover and the Eucharist. I recommend this book and think it is worth listening to more than once.
