"Jeri e oggi" venne pubblicata da Pirandello per la prima volta nel giugno del 1919 ne "Il Messaggero della domenica", anche se l'autore siciliano l'aveva scritta già nel 1915. In questa novella facciamo la conoscenza di Marino Lerna, giovane sottotenente romano. Il ragazzo sta partendo per il fronte e i genitori lo salutano disperati. Lerna è anticonformista e vive un'antiretorica patriottica per cui "l'idea di seguitare a vivere, dopo la guerra, nell'enfasi di una patria piena di eroi, gli era intollerabile". Proprio per questo motivo la novella venne inizialmente censurata dal Corriere della Sera nel 1915.
