Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

Fast way to functional Japanese

I am learning in a class, through an online program, and with these Pimsleur audio books. Of the three, these audio books work the best for me to learn conversational Japanese. I get the best results by going through each lesson twice.

Very fun and educational experience👍.

I have had a pretty good experience with it so far. Listening to a chapter the first time around seems overwhelming but each time after that you start to get the hang of it. On average I would listen to a chapter 4-6 times; twice a day for two days or if necessary three days before I feel comfortable enough to get to the next one. So far I have been keeping up more thank expected.

language learning at its best!

I lived in Japan for 12 years and have found these lessons exceptional. The Africans have a proverb that says, "The ear is connected to the tongue ". Pimleur courses prove how accurate that is. Highly recommended!

Helpful but Creepy

While the structure of the Japanese Pimsleur courses are very well done the course content is at times very strange. Approximately a quarter to a third of the content in the first 10 lessons is focused on men looking to pick up women in bars or public places. “You are sitting next to a young woman...” is how many of the practice phrases begin. “Would you like beer or sake?” “At my place or yours?” “Aren’t you going to drink something?” And I mean over and over! The phrase I have memorized best is how to order two beers, and I hate beer! If you’re a guy looking for this sort of experience in Japan then the Pimsluer course is for you. If not I’d suggest googling Japanese Pod 101, which is what our guide in Japan recommends.

great way to learn

great way to learn while going about your normal routine. I listen to it while at work or in traffic. I also like that it geta to useful phrases. Nobody is asking for the library unless you are Tom Hanks or Nicolas Cage seeking out the religious truths in the world's national treasures.

Great companion

While incredibly slow and repetitive -- that's the nature of learning! Great companion along with classes, textbooks. Genki 1+2 along with this course is a great starting point.

Practice oriented

it's amazingly useful for those of us who prefer actual practice rather than reading or writing as a means of learning languages

Makes learning easy!

I love this program! The only problem I have is that they go so fast at some points. Maybe im a slow learner, but I wish they would slow down. I feel like I have 1 second to think about the answer before they blurt it out. Otherwise it's very imformative and makes it easy to learn.

Entertaining and useful at the same time

I bought Pimsleur Language Programme for Japanese to have something to listen while doing other works that do not require full attention. I find the audio books very useful; the language is taught step by step, and the topics in earlier sections are revisited in later ones. That makes it easy to keep up with it, helps strengthening the basics of the language. I will continue with later chapters since it is entertaining and useful at the same time.

Long sentences are read too fast

The speakers speak very fast, even for long sentences there is no pause. It feels like they didn't get any feedback when creating this. Feels like the speakers just read from a script as fast as they could and with no transcript it's difficult to catch every word spoken. Nuances are often not explained and there are no tips to remember. It's more like hear, repeat until remembered, if not then repeat the unit. Memorising doesn't help you understand. Initially I thought it was great, but now I think it's just ok. Good to use with other learning material. Lots of people love this course so I would still recommend to buy. Personally I prefer the "Michel Thomas Method", or combining the two is even better.

Good way to learn language

I repeat at least once each lesson. The lessons have been good. If you do it daily you will see the results.
