विश्व साहित्य के गौरव, अंग्रेज़ी भाषा के अद्वितीय नाटककार शेक्सपियर का जन्म 26 अप्रैल, 1564 ई. को इंग्लैंड के स्ट्रैटफोर्ड-ऑन-ए वोन नामक स्थान में हुआ। उनके पिता एक किसान थे और उन्होंने कोई बहुत उच्च शिक्षा भी प्राप्त नहीं की। इसके अतिरिक्त शेक्सपियर के बचपन के बारे में बहुत कम जानकारी उपलब्ध है। 1582 ई. में उनका विवाह अपने से आठ वर्ष बड़ी ऐन हैथवे से हुआ। 1587 ई. में शेक्सपियर लंदन की एक नाटक कम्पनी में काम करने लगे। वहाँ उन्होंने अनेक नाटक लिखे जिनसे उन्होंने धन और यश दोनों कमाए। 1616 ई. में उनका देहान्त हुआ।
