"The storytelling is first-rate, with all the minutiae of spycraft, sense of place and memorable supporting characters you could wish for." (Sunday Times)

"An elegant exposition of what being a spy in the field actually feels like...evokes the world of espionage in a way the late John le Carre would have much admired." (Daily Mail)

"Some of the best writing around on the intricacies of spycraft and the high price agents pay for doing their job." (Sun)

Ordinary

This was disappointing. It didn’t evolve the characters - no Martha. And the plot was thin and not credible. It alludes too commercially to more sequels…calling Martha!

The best spy writer of his generation

Charles Cumming has written another spectacular spy novel which gave me many hours of listening pleasure. I particularly enjoyed the way Cumming intertwined his hero Kite's early career as a spy with the modern story. His love interest sub-plots are authentic and enjoyable even though he makes his main character out to be a bit of a rogue.

If I have to criticise, it's that I'm not sure where he's headed with the mysterious Martha unless she's a character that will make a brief appearance in each book. Please don't do that. Either make her a central character or kill her off. Secondly the ending was just a little too perfect with too few crisis moments.

But this was a wonderful read and I look forward to his future novels. Well done Charles Cumming.

Not his best

I love Charles Cumming and will always read his books but they do vary a bit. The section in the old Soviet Union is gripping, real Le Carre stuff. Dubai is a great setting but somehow the story got a bit muddy for me, perhaps I wasn’t paying attention properly but I ended up being a bit confused, a couple too many characters maybe, the goal of the Box operation not being clear enough perhaps. Anyway compared to practically any other spy writer this is still superior.

Ok but not great

Go for Box 88 instead. The narrative tension isn’t really in this one, and it gets bogged down in writing out all the options in a character’s thoughts
